Setting up your Yahoo account in Microsoft Outlook 2002 (XP) Note:
These instructions were written for using
Outlook 2002. You can setup your account in older versions of Outlook. Please
refer to Yahoo for instructions on how to set up your account.
Why should I set up
my Yahoo account in Microsoft Outlook?
This would allow you to use features of
Microsoft Outlook that are not available in the web interface.
- utilize Contacts for storing
information of your clients
- directly tie into the web based email
system
- automatically attach vForms to outgoing
emails
Microsoft Outlook allows you to add a new email account to your existing
profile. This means you do not have to replace your current settings in order to
send and receive Yahoo! Mail messages.
To set up your Yahoo! account
in Microsoft Outlook 2002 (XP)
- In Microsoft Outlook, click Email
Accounts
on the Tools menu.
- On the Email Accounts page, click Add
a new email account, and then click Next.
- On the Server Type page, Select POP3, and then click Next.
- On the Internet E-mail Settings (HTTP)
page,
type your name, and your full Yahoo address
(name@yahoo.com).
- Type in your Logon Information. Your
username is your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com").
- Type in your Server Information. Your
Incoming mail server (POP3) is pop.mail.yahoo.com. Your Outgoing mail
server (SMTP) is smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
- Click the Test Account Settings
button. Outlook will run 5 tests. If they all get green checkmarks your
account is setup properly. If not verify your settings and click the Test
Account Settings button again.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
Important:
The Yahoo! Mail SMTP server now requires authentication. To turn this
setting on, follow these steps:
- From the Tools menu, choose
Accounts.
- Select the Mail tab.
- Select your Yahoo! Mail account and
click Properties.
- Click on the Servers tab.
- Check the box next to My Server
Requires Authentication.
- Click OK.

To control deletion of messages
from the Yahoo! Mail Server:
- From the Tools menu, choose Email
Accounts.
- Select View or change existing email
accounts. Click Next.
- Select your Yahoo account (it probably
says pop.mail.yahoo.com). Click Change.
- Click on the More Settings...
button.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- In the Delivery section at the bottom of the window, check "Leave a copy
of messages on server" if you want to save your Yahoo! Mail messages on the
Yahoo! Mail server as well as on your local computer. Do not check this
box if you want your messages to be deleted from the Yahoo! Mail server once
you have received them in Microsoft Outlook.
