vTip #36 - Changing Outlook 2002 (XP) attachment security

Why would I want to change the attachment security settings in Outlook XP?

In an effort to minimize damage to computers from viruses Microsoft removed your ability to receive and send certain types of attachments in email. For the average home user this is not a problem. For the business person this could cause you to not be able to send or receive documents and/or programs that you need access to.

There are two ways around this. You can either Zip the files with a program such as WinZip or you can change your attachment security settings.

Note: Attachment Options is for Outlook 2002 (XP) only.

  1. Go to http://www.slovaktech.com/attachmentoptions.htm and click on Download Attachment Options (3.3 MB)
  2. Run from current location, or Open Document.
  3. In Outlook go to the Tools menu, and click on Options.
  4. Click the Attachment Security & Options tab.
  5. Click on the exe extension and move it from Level 1 to Level 2 then hit OK.
  6. Restart Outlook.
