Why should I set up my Hotmail/MSN account in Outlook Express?

This would allow you to use features of Outlook Express that are not available in the web interface.

  • utilize the windows address book for contact names
  • directly tie into the web based email system
  • automatically attach vForms to outgoing emails

To set up your Hotmail account in Outlook Express

To set up your Hotmail account in Outlook Express, you'll need to use Outlook Express version 5.5 or later.

  1. In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu.
  2. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.
  3. On the first page of the Internet Connection Wizard, type your full name, and then click Next.
  4. On the Internet E-mail Address page, type your full Hotmail address (name@hotmail.com).
  5. On the E-mail Server Name page, click HTTP in the My incoming mail server is box.

In the box My HTTP service provider is, click Hotmail or Other.

If the box Incoming mail server is displayed, type http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp.

  1. On the Internet Mail Logon page, type your account name and password in the respective boxes. Your account name is the first half of your MSN Hotmail e-mail address (the information before the @ sign).
  2. Click Finish to add your Hotmail account to Outlook Express.
To store Hotmail messages in Outlook Express

You can store your Hotmail messages on your computer using Microsoft Outlook Express (version 5 or later). This way you won't have to worry about exceeding the size limit for your Hotmail account.

  1. In Outlook Express, create a folder in Local Folders for your Hotmail messages. (On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.)
  2. Click your Hotmail Inbox and drag messages from there to the folder you created. (To drag a message: Click it, hold down the mouse button while moving it to the folder, and release it.)
